This has always been a weakness of mine. Whenever a coworker brings donuts or einstein bagels I have a hard time saying no. Who can say no to free food? I might have the will power to say no the first time I see them in the break room. But, later in the morning, when I’m filling my water bottle and fully expecting the donuts are all gone so my force field is down. It is a mixed emotion of joy and sorrow when there are still a half dozen or so left. That voice that was happy to see the donuts drowns yells, “Alright!” and the good voice begins to rationalize…”One donut can’t hurt.”
Here is my game plan today. I am making a promise to myself that I will not eat the donuts. There are 3 boxes of dunkin donuts sitting in the breakroom as I type this. I had the will power to say no when I dropped my lunch off in the fridge. I was very tempted to take “just one”. I decided that they weren’t going to be gone so fast so I should give myself time to consider my options.
How many calories are in one donut?
I looked it up and one chocolate frosted cake donut from dunkin donuts contains 340 calories! That is about how many calories I should be eating for breakfast. Typically, I eat 2-3 donuts when someone brings them. It is painfully obvious why I have gained over 20 lbs in the past year. 3 donuts is over 1000 calories! Should I eat 3 donuts for breakfast, lunch and a snack? Or, would I prefer to have a serving of cereal with a banana, a ham sandwich, 6 clementine oranges and baby carrots for 200 calories less? Count the calories and decide if it is worth it? If you’re not trying to lose weight an occasional donut can be okay but I need to lose 25 lbs in 10 weeks. I’ve enjoyed junk food too much and now it is time to pay the price. Time to take control.
Tips
- Fight your urges to eat junk the moment you are tempted.
- Stay as busy as possible
- Remove yourself from the situation.
- If you know you’re going to be faced with food you shouldn’t be eating have a game plan and commit yourself to it. Self discipline can be gained and the victory actually does feel very good.
