Believe, Trust, Change

“Believe in yourself, Trust the process, Change FOREVER” – Bob Harper

Reaching your weight loss goals starts with believing in yourself. This goes for any goal. Doubt and fear must be overcome before you really need to worry about the HOW of losing weight. How do we learn to believe and trust? Make promises you can keep!!!!! What change can you make today that will be permanant for the rest of your life? Start small and progress when you’re ready. Don’t stop progressing.

To achieve things you have never achieved before, you must do things you have never done before. You must think in new ways. You must challenge yourself to get better EVERYDAY. You must become a person you have never been before. Remember success is not determined what you know. It is determined by the person you become. LTM

I am 100% commited to being able to do one unassisted pull up. I know that that commitment needs to be renewed each and every day. I’m not focusing on reaching 15% body fat or becoming an iron man I’m focusing on one goal that will empower me to reach higher.

Getting Fat Without Trying

Are you like me? Do you seem to gain weight without even realizing it? Why do some people have a hard time gaining weight while, for some of us, it comes so easily? I don’t really know the answers to these questions but this report caught my attention. It is crazy how many food items contain corn syrup and partially hydrogenated oils. It is because the corn used in corn syrup is super cheap. It is super cheap because the government subsidizes it. The same government that puts out the food pyramid funds the farming industry with very little money going to produce more fresh fruit and vegetables.

I think our health is our own responsibility we really can’t blame anyone else for our ignorance. The first step to taking responsibility is knowledge. So put down that box of hostess cupcakes and oreo cookies and read up on proper nutrition. There are tax dollars helping you gain weight but there are also dollars being used to educate so take advantage.

Grocery Shopping With Young Children

Spiderman Fruit SnacksDon’t do it!  Since starting our most recent weight loss competition, we have tried to do our shopping in the evenings when one of us can be at home with the kids.  I dread arguing with a 4 year old on why we should not buy every box of cookies, sugar cereal and popsicles.

I just watched a report on the food industry that opened my eyes a little more to the amount of marketing that goes into encouraging kids to eat more junk food.  You want to know the first step to turning things around? Turn off the television!  …and don’t bring your kids shopping if you can.  Although, there is something to be said about teaching your kids to make healthy decisions.  I just don’t think the grocery store is the best place to do that.  You can’t reason with a toddler who wants the fruit snacks with Scooby-Doo or their favorite Disney princess on the box.

Set the example and teach your kids to snack on fruit when they are hungry in between meals.  We are not perfect in our home but for the past few months we have made a big effort to avoid buying processed snack foods and it has definitely helped me lose weight and I see my kids eating grapes, apples, pears and strawberries and it makes me feel really good.

How to avoid eating donuts at work

donutThis has always been a weakness of mine.  Whenever a coworker brings donuts or einstein bagels I have a hard time saying no.  Who can say no to free food?  I might have the will power to say no the first time I see them in the break room. But, later in the morning, when I’m filling my water bottle and fully expecting the donuts are all gone so my force field is down. It is a mixed emotion of joy and sorrow when there are still a half dozen or so left.  That voice that was happy to see the donuts drowns yells, “Alright!” and the good voice begins to rationalize…”One donut can’t hurt.”

Here is my game plan today.  I am making a promise to myself that I will not eat the donuts. There are 3 boxes of dunkin donuts sitting in the breakroom as I type this.  I had the will power to say no when I dropped my lunch off in the fridge. I was very tempted to take “just one”.  I decided that they weren’t going to be gone so fast so I should give myself time to consider my options.

How many calories are in one donut?

I looked it up and one chocolate frosted cake donut from dunkin donuts contains 340 calories!  That is about how many calories I should be eating for breakfast.  Typically, I eat 2-3 donuts when someone brings them.  It is painfully obvious why I have gained over 20 lbs in the past year.  3 donuts is over 1000 calories!  Should I eat 3 donuts for breakfast, lunch and a snack?  Or, would I prefer to have a serving of cereal with a banana, a ham sandwich, 6 clementine oranges and baby carrots for 200 calories less?  Count the calories and decide if it is worth it?  If you’re not trying to lose weight an occasional donut can be okay but I need to lose 25 lbs in 10 weeks.  I’ve enjoyed junk food too much and now it is time to pay the price.  Time to take control.

Tips

  • Fight your urges to eat junk the moment you are tempted.
  • Stay as busy as possible
  • Remove yourself from the situation.
  • If you know you’re going to be faced with food you shouldn’t be eating have a game plan and commit yourself to it.  Self discipline can be gained and the victory actually does feel very good.
